In a chilling crime that underscores the growing threats faced by cryptocurrency holders, a French couple was subjected to a violent home invasion, losing approximately $1 million in Bitcoin. The incident, which occurred in Le Chesnay-Rocquencourt, a suburb west of Paris, adds to a worrying trend of what is known as the "$5 wrench attacks" against crypto owners, where criminals coerce victims to transfer cryptocurrencies under duress.
The attack took place early on a Monday morning when three individuals, masquerading as police officers, entered the residence of the couple, both in their late 50s. Armed and threatening with a knife, the assailants demanded the Bitcoin transfer. Post-heist, the attackers restrained the husband, inflicted injuries on both victims, and escaped in a white van, as reported by TF1 Info and Agence France-Presse (AFP).
In the aftermath of the invasion, the wife managed to free her husband and sought help from neighbours. The brutal assault has drawn the attention of the Versailles prosecutor's office, leading to an active investigation by the Brigade for the Repression of Banditry. The crime is currently being scrutinized under several severe charges, including sequestration, armed robbery by an organized group, and conspiracy. No arrests had been confirmed by local authorities as of the last update.
This attack highlights the pressing issue of security for cryptocurrency users, particularly in France, where such targeted crimes have been on the rise. It serves as a reminder of the potential physical threats that accompany digital assets, urging stricter precautions and awareness among crypto holders. The authorities continue their investigation, as the search for the perpetrators is underway.
